Eamon says "F**k It"
Actually, that's not me talking. It's the New York rapper Eamon Doyle, who spells his first name with one "n" instead of two. His song "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)" has zoomed to the number one spot in this week's British Singles Charts, beating "My Band" by Eminem's D12 into second place.
The hit song is a lovelorn ballad whose lyrics ("All those kisses don't mean jack/I don't want you back") come in two versions: "clean" and "explicit". I don't need to tell you which one is the more popular. And this is the interesting thing about Eamon for he is not alone a rapper; he is the creator of a new musical genre, "ho-wop," which blends elements of soul and doo-wop with large doses of "adult language" and "sexual content". Some would include "misogyny" in that list but rap has long had that reputation. Anyway, add in Eamon's white skin, and you have the makings of something different. Well, that's what the music business thinks.
The 19-year old from Staten Island is hot, but is he any good? Well, he has a decent voice, and it can be heard at its best on the songs "On & On" and "4 the Rest of Your Life". He's also well served by his producers, veterans of the rap game, who have given him some great beats. Behind all this is a marketing machine that's smooth. So smooth, in fact, that when the BBC broadcast the "clean" track of "F**k It" on Top of the Pops, it did not have to bleep a single syllable.
Will Eamon be remembered? Like, at this time next year? Perhaps. But maybe by linguists rather than musicologists. Since 1503, when it was first recorded, lexicographers have tracked the persistent advance of the word "fuck". Its arrival at the top of the British charts in the shape of "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)" is sure to join the Lady Chatterley trial as a milestone along its road towards acceptance.
Comments
I agree that linguists are more likely to remember this song than anyone else. I'm no prude, but I admit I was shocked when I heard it the first time here in Sweden (where the "explicit" version is the ONLY one that gets any airplay). English is practically the "other" official language here and Swedes toss the word *fuck* around very casually. Since the word is not native to their own language and there is no Swedish equivalent (that I've been able to determine at least), most of them have no idea how offensive and inappropriate it can sound to a native English speaker. Consequently, I hear it far more often here and in a much greater variety of situations than I ever did when I lived in the U.S., especially from teenagers. My guess is that only the "clean" version of the song is getting played on the American airwaves right now...WITH bleeps. Cheers, Shazzer
