OK, you've only got until Thursday, but that should give you enough time to rattle off 1,000 words. Yes, that's right, the deadline is at hand for this year's Nico Colchester Journalism Fellowship. Your topic, should you decide to accept the mission, is "Integration v Multiculturalism: What can European countries learn from each other?"
Two fellowships are being offered this year: one for a British or Irish applicant and one for an applicant from elsewhere in the European Union. The prize is a three-month stint at The Economist or the Financial Times and the two winners get £4,000 each to cover travel and accommodation expenses. Send your entry to: ncprize@economist.com. In November 2002, Rainy Day paid tribute to Nico Colchester in "Making words dance".

Conceited? No primary sources? Offering a lofty opinion where certainty is impossible? Skilled at turning out dull Pollyfilla prose?
If so, then you're the man!
I wouldn't think of this as being up to much. I've just cancelled my subscription.

Really? Interesting.
See where you're coming from entirely though. I'm retaining mine for the time being. While the commentary is irritating it is a useful one-stop-shop for a news roundup.
What are you reading in its place Peter?

Magill, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the FT, the Atlantic and BOOKS!

"Magill, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the FT, the Atlantic and BOOKS!" Well said. Well read.
In my case, a dollop of blogs can be added to the above list. And a few newspapers, too. It's a bit of treadmill and it has some signs of an addiction, but it's fairly harmless as these things go. I mean, imagine what it would be like if the above were different kinds of booze -- gin, brandy, whiskey, wine, beer, poitin? Tough mix to stomach, ehd?
