World Cup Watch

Only 12 days to go now. Seeing that everyone's agreed that Brazil will win the World Cup, what's left to talk about? Well, there's the Golden Boot. The wha? Well, it was once called the Golden Boot, but it's now known as the Adidas Golden Shoe Award. Whatever. It's given to the player who scores the most goals in the tournament.

The Rainy Day money is on El Zorro del Desierto, aka the Desert Fox, aka Jared Borgetti of Mexico to grab the boot/shoe. The country's No.9 scored the most goals of any team in the Germany qualifiers with 14. Brazil's Ronaldo got 10; Portugal's Pauleta and Togo's Emmanuel Adebayor both finished with 11.Seeing that Mexico's opponents in Group D are Angola, Iran and Portugal, none of which is famous for its defence, a tenner on El Zorro del Desierto might be money well wagered.

Talking of Mexico and golden goals, Borgetti's boot was blessed by Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera when he officiated at a special mass for the "Tri," as the team is affectionately called, on 20 May in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. "As Mexicans we are joyful and supportive of our brothers who will be representing our country," Cardinal Rivera Carrera told the congregation. "They have come to the holy feet of Our Lady of Guadalupe." That should set up Borgetti for a brace against Iran, no doubt. After mass, according to the Catholic News Service, "a crowd of thousands ran alongside the team bus as it made its way down the boulevard bound for the airport." And there are some people who insist that this is only a game?
