The all singin', all dancin' Bob Dylan on Broadway
Date: Monday, 25 September. Venue: Brooks Atkinson Theatre, 256 W 47th Street, New York. Event: The Times They Are A-Changin'. The long-awaited musical? Not quite. More a "dance musical". Star choreographer Twyla Tharp will use Dylan's songs to tell the story of a young man, Coyote, and his attempt to break away from his father, Captain Ah Rab, who runs a travelling circus. Songs such as "Don't Think Twice" and "Not Dark Yet" are used to tell the story, while "Highway 61" and "Masters of War" are used in the circus act.
In this "original action-adventure fable conceived Ms. Tharp", says the blurb, "choreography is used primarily within the context of the circus act, and in Tharp's traditional no-holds-barred style, incorporates everything from trampolines, stilts, skateboards and rope tricks." Great. BTW, loved these bits from the FAQ:
Is Bob Dylan in the show?
With his busy touring schedule and multiple projects spanning all media (an upcoming album, a current XM Radio program, an upcoming biographical film and numerous books currently available) Bob Dylan himself is, obviously, not a cast member. Is Bob Dylan involved in the show?
Dylan has contributed to the orchestrations.
And if that isn't enough to get the heart racing, there's this to look forward to on 29 August. "Cold Irons Bound" rocks! "Well the fat's in the fire and the water's in the tank/ The whiskey's in the jar and the money's in the bank/ I tried to love and protect you because I cared/ I'm gonna remember forever the joy that we shared." Bob Dylan keeps getting older and keeps getting better. A mystery. A marvel. A musical.
