Singlish? Hella!
Roy, who runs the Foggy Avenues blog over in California, has this to say about English-Global:
Somehow I can't be too impressed with Singapore, while I think your post is valid, the Irish already speak their very own glorious but universally understood variants of English. A language far more broadly understood than Hakka, or whatever odd dialect the average Singaporean trade officials' grandparents speak at home. Singlish however is by far one of the most widely mocked dialects of English and takes some getting used to figure out what is being said, it is a proper pidgin nonetheless.I think the distinction between different types of English, is more of a stunt, unless Indian English uses words such as crore and lakh, and other variants offer us tiffin and shonky.
What next, English-Northern California, in which we learn that Singapore is a great place to invest offering hella opportunities?
Thanks for the comment and the "hella", Roy. Actually, I've got a hella of writing to do today, so I'd better get going now, but just want to say that "Borat" was great last night. Especially because of the post-film commentary provided by Mrs Rainy Day, Xtian and T. We had a hella Sexy Time! But more about that on Monday.
