America's Cup nowhere, everywhere and anywhere

No racing, but really rich media from Alcatel-Lucent on its America's Cup Anywhere site. You want 3D animations? You've got 'em. New Zealand's Animation Research Ltd was awarded the job of providing virtual/3D racing coverage. Each boat has an ARL "kit" on board that relays boat performance and location data to ARL servers, which churn out 3D maps with course lines, markers and laylines that are clear to see from any angle. At €29.95 this is a snip. (If only the wind would start blowing!)

Still, there is always Second Life. Starting with the Louis Vuitton Cup semi-finals on 14 May, the avatars will be able to experience the racing at Port AmericasCupAnywhere, an island created by Alcatel-Lucent. Only 10 members so far, though. Becalmed is the word, perhaps.
