Stop Channel 4 dining off Diana's corpse!

On 17 July last year, Rainy Day wrote: "Last week's decisions by the Italian magazine Chi and the Spanish magazine Interviú to publish a photo of the dying Princess of Wales must rank as one of civil society's low points. The notion of 'press freedom', if it means anything, must mean the freedom of the press to ensure personal freedom, which includes the right of the dying to dignity and the right of families to private grief. For these two magazines to invade the sacred space of a person's ebbing moments of life goes beyond the reprehensible. It is wanton cruelty." The post was called "Italian, Spanish, German and French necrophilia" and we thought that it was the end of the matter because it's not possible for the mass media to sink any lower.

But no, Channel 4, a state-subsidised British TV service plans to broadcast a documentary showing a photograph of Diana dying. Channel 4 claims that its film, "Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel", deals "sensitively" with the image, taken in the immediate aftermath of the Paris car crash 10 years ago and showing the fatally injured princess receiving oxygen. Take a moment now to fill out this complaint form and request that Channel 4 drops its plans to profit from the imagery of death and suffering. Tell them that freedom of the press must respect the right of the dying to dignity. It's not too late to prevent this outrageous exploitation. Stop mass media necrophilia!
