Obama and Berlin: Made for each other

There he was in Berlin on Tuesday. The democratically elected Prime Minister of Iraq, Nuri al-Maliki, signing an Iraq-Germany bilateral investment agreement. As the ink dried, someone in the room must have pondered the irony of it all. Because this is the man who signed the order that led to Saddam Hussein's execution. More ironic still is the fact that if Berlin had had its way in 2003, Saddam would still be in power in Iraq and Nuri al-Maliki would still be hanging out in Iran or Syria, trying to keep one step ahead of his henchmen.

But it gets better because today Berlin will turn out in force to welcome Barack Obama. And just like those ever-so bilateral German politicians, if Obama had had his way, there would be no Prime Minister Maliki today. And if Obama had had his way a second time, there would have been no "surge" to allow Maliki to continue in office and sign those bilateral investment agreements. So, tell me: What has happened to irony?

Talking about the new Carter, Ann Althouse skewers a scurrilous hack who is now behaving just like Berlin and its oleaginous politicians.
