John Martyn, RIP

The cause of death was pneumonia. He celebrated his 60th birthday in September, but had suffered increasingly bad health ever since the amputation of his right leg below the knee five years ago. The late John Martyn was blessed and cursed by the gods. He made memorable music, but caused pain to those who loved him during a decade of self-destruction that began in the late 1970s. We remember him tonight, however, as the artist who gave us timeless songs like this jewel.

Beautiful lyrics. Hypnotic voice. Exquisite guitar work. "May you never lay your head down without a hand to hold / May you never make your bed out in the cold." John Martyn (1948 - 2009)
