Mike Seeger: 1933-2009
In Chronicles, Volume One, Bob Dylan describes how one musician in New York City during the early 1960s inspired him: "He played the full index of the old time styles — Delta blues, ragtime, minstrel songs, buck-and-wing, dance reels, play party, hymns and gospel. I was so absorbed in listening to him that I wasn't even aware of myself."
That was Mike Seeger, who worked with a wide variety of artists over the decades. You can, for example, hear him on Raising Sand, the recording by Alison Krauss and the Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, which won the best album award at the this year's Grammies.
Walking Boss comes from a moving tribute to the late Mike Seeger at the Smithsonian Institution.
