"The president should boycott Copenhagen." Now, there's a direct statement. No beating about the bush. But it's Obama that's meant in today's opinion piece in the Guardian and the writer is best-selling author Sarah Palin. "The president should boycott Copenhagen" is certain to be a hit.
Palin, like most global warming sceptics, is not a climate change denier. Far from it. "I saw the impact of changing weather patterns firsthand while serving as governor of our only Arctic state. I was one of the first governors to create a subcabinet to deal specifically with the issue and to recommend common-sense policies to respond to the coastal erosion, thawing permafrost and retreating sea ice that affect Alaska's communities and infrastructure."
For the Guardian, Palin's piece will produce a tidal wave of comments, many, no doubt, questioning her ability to speak about scientific matters. But her underlying point — that cap-and-trade (or cap-and-tax, as she calls it) legislation would impose severe costs on the US economy for uncertain benefits — is difficult to challenge.
