Herzog on Gesualdo, continued further
Musicologists rediscovered Carlo Gesualdo in the 1950s. One who became a life-long fan was Glenn Watkins, an American scholar of Renaissance music. He ended up as the leading authority on the composer's works. In 1973, he published a study of Gesualdo's life and music, with a preface by Igor Stravinsky, and now he's back with The Gesualdo Hex: Music, Myth, and Memory. The book follows the contours of Gesualdo's standing over the centuries, and tries to explain the phenomenon and its extraordinary harmonies and passions.
Over now to Werner Herzog for the next part of "Death for Five Voices". And for those just joining the show, here's Part I and Part II. Documentaries don't get much better than this.
