Oh, the games people play

Saturday, 8 September, 2012

The year 1969 was the year of songs such as Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Get Back by The Beatles. Elvis Presley released In the Ghetto and Johnny Cash had a hit with A Boy Named Sue. But the Grammy Award for Song of the Year went to Joe South for Games People Play. Less well known is the fact that Joe South played guitar on Aretha Franklin’s Chain of Fools, Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde and Simon and Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence. He struggled after his brother, Tommy, committed suicide in 1971 and drug abuse then derailed his career. He died on Wednesday at his home northeast of Atlanta, Georgia, aged 72. RIP.
