Street door in Spain

A door just opened on a street —
I, lost, was passing by —
An instant’s width of warmth disclosed
And wealth, and company.

The door as sudden shut, and I,
I, lost, was passing by, —
Lost doubly, but by contrast most,
Enlightening misery.

Emily Dickinson (10 December 1830 — 15 May 1886)

According to Grant Snider, Emily Dickinson had no known career other than poetry, but “her sister Lavinia was cat-obsessed. So Emily must have been forced to cat-sit occasionally.”
