Red White Blue

In September last year, the American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd appeared on stage without the Confederate Flag as their backdrop. The controversial emblem had for years been part of their concert show, but they decided to abandon it, arguing that they didn’t want to be associated with “extremists” who had adopted it as their own. After protests from fans, however, Lynyrd Skynyrd changed their minds, noting that the Confederate Flag was “part of our Southern heritage” and quoting States’ Rights symbolism as a justification for the reversal.

“My hair’s turning white,
My neck’s always been red,
My collar’s still blue,
We’ve always been here
Just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
We’ve always been,
Red, White, and Blue”
