Federer & Murray: Genius vs. Talent

Monday, 9 July, 2012

Federer vs. Murray is nicely summed up here: “Talent does what it can. Genius does what it must“. With his seventh Wimbledon win and his 17th grand slam title overall, the time has truly come for Roger Federer to be considered the greatest sportsman in history. Lucky were those who were present in London yesterday because “the truth is that TV tennis is to live tennis pretty much as video porn is to the felt reality of human love.” So wrote the late David Foster Wallace back in 2006 in the New York Times. His subject was “Federer as Religious Experience.” Snippet: “Beauty is not the goal of competitive sports, but high-level sports are a prime venue for the expression of human beauty. The relation is roughly that of courage to war.”
