The Games of the XX Olympiad in Munich and their victims

On this day in 1972, the Games of the XX Olympiad began in Munich and continued until 10 September. At 4:30am on the morning of 5 September, a group of Palestinian terrorists broke into the Olympic Village and entered two apartments being used by the Israeli team at 31 Connollystraße.

The memorial plaque on the wall reads: “The team of the State of Israel lived in this building during the XX Olympiad Summer Games from 21 VIII to 5 IX 1972. On 5 September, David Berger, Ze’ev Friedman, Yossef Gutfreund, Eliezer Halfin, Yossef Romano, Amitzur Shapira, Kehat Shorr, Mark Slavin, Andre Spitzer, Yakov Springer, Moshe Weinberger, died a violent death. Honour to their memory.”
