Song of the Year: And Dream of Sheep

Tuesday, 20 December, 2016 0 Comments

“Little light will guide them to me.” The line has a special relevance at Christmas, and the terror killings of innocent Christmas revellers in Berlin lend it extra poignancy. And Dream of Sheep by Kate Bush is thus deemed our Song of the Year.

Prior to her 22-date run of sold-out London concerts in 2014, Kate Bush spent three days submerged in a tank filled with water. The goal was to create a sense of authenticity while making a video for And Dream of Sheep, a song about a woman lost at sea. The clip — which features the singer strapped in a lifejacket, hoping to be rescued — was created for her return to the stage, during which she performed The Ninth Wave, her 1985 song cycle.

Although originally released on Hounds of Love, the song has been reworked and the new version appears on Kate Bush and the K Fellowship: Before the Dawn, a live album that captures her 2014 show on three CDs and four vinyl albums.

“Little light shining
Little light will guide them to me
My face is all lit up
If they find me racing white horses
They’ll not take me for a buoy
Let me be weak, let me sleep and dream of sheep.”

The ruin of Marina Diamandis

Saturday, 28 March, 2015 0 Comments

It’s going to be loud at the Autódromo de Interlagos in São Paulo tonight, but instead of the usual revving of F1 engines, there’ll be music. Lollapalooza Brasil promises two days of great sounds with a lineup that includes Pharrell Williams, Skrillex, Jack White, Interpol and Marina and the Diamonds. The Welsh singer is promoting her third album, Froot, and from it here’s I’m a Ruin, which was directed by Marcus Lundqvist and filmed in January on the island of Lanzarote.

There might be a few too many echoes of Kate Bush, Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine and Madonna here for some of Marina’s core fans, though. Snippets from the YouTube comments:

Daniel Sanchez Davey: “I love Marina but this video is too similar to Madonna’s Frozen vídeo clip (not a Madonna fan) seriously the oriental black clothing, the desert, fast skies, the hands on the earth. I’m sorry but it looks almost like a copy, just take a look. What happened here Marina? You are always very original.”

Dania Osorio1: “Well, marinas a huge fan of Madonna so I think she hot inspired from that video. Yet you cant really judge on her for making an awesome video its similar but it was marinafied?.”

Feather Tongue

Didn’t get tickets for Kate Bush at the Apollo in Hammersmith? Lots of other people didn’t, if that’s any consolation. For those seeking solace, there’s always Lyla Foy, who’ll be playing in Chicago tonight and in Kilkenny in May. The young Londoner does not disguise her adoration of Kate Bush in Feather Tongue, which exudes the kind of retro romanticism that made the composer of Wuthering Heights so famous so long ago.

Natasha Khan has a Björk/Bush moment

Better known by her stage name Bat for Lashes, Natasha Khan has been likened to Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, Siouxsie Sioux, Fiona Apple, Björk and Kate Bush. The influences of the latter two are very much present here.
